Last week we unveiled the first half of a two-part blog highlighting some of the best “Home Away from Home” truck stops in the United States.
All of the truck stops mentioned in the previous article are located to the west of Mississippi. For this article, we wanted to highlight some of the famous stops located in Pohl Transportation’s neck of the woods – all located east of the Mississippi.
How do you think our picks for truck stops east of the Mississippi pan out?
1. R-Place Restaurant

If you’re ever heading down I-80 through Morris, Illinois it’s an absolute must you stop at R-Place, a 24/7 eatery which serves everything from Americana cuisine to a variety of baked goods.
Even more, the R-Place also has its very own food challenge – a 2-pound hamburger of which half is all ground beef and the other half an array of cheese, the bun and two-toppings. Eat this giant within an hour and become the victor. The R-Place’s food has become so popular they even cater.
2. Tamarack Tourist Information Center

Beckley, WV 25801
Located on Exit 45 just off I-77 and I-64, the Tamarack Tourist Information Center located in Beckley, WV comes with a little bit of everything.
Among some of its features are a food court, a fine arts gallery, a theater with live performances, a conference center and a variety of stores which sell local products.
It’s estimated around a half a million people stop at the center annually.
3. Porky’s South of the Border

Hamer, SC
Interested being in “South of the Border” without having to leave the U.S.?
At Porky’s South of the Border in Hamer, SC you can do just that! This awesome truck stop comes with free wifi, an indoor heated pool, a campground, a hotel with suites, tons of restaurants, park rides and more!
4. Florida 595 Truck Stop

Davie, FL
Easily known as one of the best in the country, the Florida 595 Truck Stop in Davie, Fla. has a slew of unique features including medical and dental clinics, drive-thru truck washes, a game room and spa, security-guarded parking lots and several restaurants including a sports bar, home-style diner and pizza and sub shop.
5. White’s Travel Center
2440 Raphine Road
Raphine, VA
Opening its doors in the 1970s, White’s truck stop has been a driver favorite for years.
Some of its features include a driver’s lounge, laundry room, an Iron Skillet and even a video arcade. It was also known for an impressive gun and motorcycle collection.
